Chapter Four

I slid underneath the cascading water, trying not to think of anything, letting it wash away my confusion. My mind struggled to find who I really was and how I could be so aroused by a guy, not when in my twenty-six years I’d never thought of anything else besides pussy.

An image flashed into my head, of myself as a teenager, when I was about fourteen years old. I remembered being in a locker room with the other kids after gym class and being fascinated by their bodies, especially those of the older guys, and the way their dicks bounced around when they walked. Someone had shouted queer or faggot at me—I can’t remember exactly—after catching me staring at them. I was so embarrassed I punched him in the face and told him I was no queer. Back then, I was already big and strong for my age and would win a fight with anyone, even older kids. Was that being gay? I really didn’t know.

After washing and drying myself, I left the bathroom and went into the bedroom. I put on clean clothes and prepared myself to leave. True, I was afraid of stepping outside the confines of my apartment, but I had to go. I had to see Marco and talk to him in person. I didn’t know if he was on-call that night, so I called him to see if he was home. Marco picked up the phone and said it was his day off, so I said I was going to drop by and hung up. I approached my front door and stared at the overcoat. Flashes from what had happened overpowered me and I turned around and went to the closet, searching for another coat. When I got to the front door again, I took a deep breath and finally left.

As I ventured into the night, I felt watched, as though a thousand eyes observed my every move. This was a whole new experience for me. I’d never felt threatened before while walking alone. But tonight I felt exposed, as if all my inner fears were taking shape with each step along the way. I hurried through the bleak streets, feeling like I couldn’t walk fast enough, looking over my shoulder all the time as if to assure myself I wasn’t being followed. I shuddered at the thought that this might be my new norm, at the possibility that my life would now be spent always afraid, not knowing if and when the man in my nightmares would appear again.

Five minutes later, I arrived at Marco’s building, panting and out of breath, freezing but at the same time sweating like it was a hundred degrees. I rang the bell but he didn’t answer. I rang again barely five seconds later and Marco’s voice came to life in the speaker. I felt immense relief.

“Is that you, dickhead?”

“Open up, please!” I said, despair making my voice rise in pitch.

“Okay, okay. Keep your pants on,” Marco said as he buzzed me in.
